what are dermal fillers and neurotoxins

WHAT ARE

DERMAL FILLERS, NEUROTOXINS, & COLLAGEN STIMULATORS?

Dermal fillers and Neurotoxins are popular treatments for our patients that want prominent results from a treatment that is minimally invasive and has no downtime. Both treatment options target wrinkles, offer natural looking results and are not a permanent alteration but thats basically where the similarities stop. Let's take a look at each treatment method and what might be the right choice for you:

NEUROTOXINS

  • Reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles that appear during facial expressions by reducing the motion of the facial muscles.

  • Results can take several days or weeks to fully present.

  • Neurotoxin injections smooth the signs of aging by relaxing underlying facial muscles, which can take years off the face’s appearance by reducing:

    • Frown lines

    • Crow’s feet

    • Other minor facial wrinkles

  • If you clench your jaw or grind your teeth, neurotoxins can be injected to the masseter muscle which may result in improved TMJ symptoms and facial slimming in higher doses

  • The "Lip Flip": Neurotoxin injections in the upper lip area help relax the muscles in the area, reduce wrinkles (smoker/straw lines), and can even help turn the upper lip up, creating a fuller, less “gummy” smile

DERMAL FILLERS

  • Smooth static wrinkles that are present when your face is completely relaxed

  • Results are immediate. Slight to moderate swelling can be expected for the first couple days after treatment

  • Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that us with plump, smooth skin. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, dermal fillers can be an effective way to:

    • Plump thin lips and restore a youthful contour

    • Restore lost volume to cheeks and undereyes

    • Soften and smooth facial creases and wrinkles

    • Improve the appearance of recessed scars

COLLAGEN STIMULATOR

  • Sculptra is the original FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA) collagen stimulator that can improve skin glow, tightness, and
jawline contour for up to 2 years.

  • Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which provide instant volume with hyaluronic acid, Sculptra works beneath the surface of the skin to stimulate collagen growth, gradually restoring structure and elasticity for a more youthful and natural look over time.

  • Because collagen is the key to firm, youthful skin, Sculptra is ideal for:

    • Restoring lost facial volume due to aging

    • Softening deep lines and wrinkles in areas like the cheeks, temples, and jawline

    •  Enhancing skin thickness and elasticity to combat sagging   Providing long-lasting, natural results that develop gradually over months

  • Results appear subtly, with full effects visible after several months as collagen production increases. While it requires patience, the results can last up to two years—far longer than traditional fillers.

  • Sculptra offers a gradual and natural-looking transformation that strengthens your skin from within, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a long-term solution to facial aging.

The best way to determine which service is the right choice for your current skin type and condition, is to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled aestheticians.

During a consultation, your physician will examine your skin. This helps to determine whether a neurotoxin or filler can diminish the signs of aging that concern you. You may learn that another cosmetic procedure is more appropriate.

Before getting a filler, it is essential that you tell your dermatologist about all medical conditions that you have. It is especially important for your dermatologist to know if you have any of the following:

  • Allergies

  • Bleeding disorder

  • Cold sore breakouts

  • Heart condition

  • Previous cosmetic treatment (mention other injections and implants)

  • Easily irritated skin

Your physician will ask you about your medications. Be sure to tell your him or her about all medicines that you take, even ones that do not require a prescription.

Be sure to mention all vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies. It is especially important for your physician to know if you are taking any of the following:

  • Warfarin

  • Aspirin

  • Ibuprofen

  • Vitamin E

  • St. John’s wort

  • Garlic supplements

  • Ginger supplements

Be sure to mention everything, even if it seems unimportant. Even if you haven’t taken a supplement or medicine for a while, it’s worth mentioning.
